A county ethics commission in Maryland has determined that if you make negative statements about transgenderism, your word is not reliable. The stunning conclusion, now under appeal at a state ethics panel, was made by the Montgomery County Ethics Commission and signed by member Nina Weisbroth in a four-year-old dispute over an effort to hold a referendum on the county’s adoption of what’s become known as the “coed showers” bill. The law provides “discrimination” protections for transgenders, and critics say it opens up virtually all of the county – from shower rooms to restrooms to other private areas – to...

Like many in his community, S.F. Makalani-MaHee spent a lifetime avoiding doctors — particularly the gynecologist, a physician who specializes on an area of the body that has always felt foreign to him. Born a female but identifying as a man, the Fort Lauderdale community activist dreams of having surgery to complete a transition fulfilled in every other way but one: He still has a woman's genitalia. Changing that would mean going to the doctor and risking the very experiences he has long dreaded: ugly incidents that experts and studies say are all too common for the transgender community.

Gov. Deval Patrick signed legislation Wednesday adding the words “gender identity” to the state’s non-discrimination laws, a bid to prevent discrimination against transgender residents seeking housing, employment, credit or post-secondary education. The bill also expands the state's hate crimes statutes to include violence perpetrated against transgender men and women. Patrick said he signed the bill as a matter of “conscience” even though lawmakers had stripped a provision that would have required all “sex-segregated facilities” to grant admission to people based on their gender identity, rather than their biological gender. The provision, viewed as a key component by advocates of the...

Several people have come forward claiming a transgender woman, who was arrested for allegedly injecting toxic substances into a woman's buttocks, performed similar procedures on them, health officials said Monday. Oneal Ron Morris, 30, bonded out of jail after being arrested on Friday at a North Lauderdale home. She was charged with practicing medicine without a license with serious bodily injury after an investigation by Miami Gardens Police and the Florida Department of Health. The Florida Department of Health was told by a victim in 2010 that Morris allegedly injected treatments into the victim's buttocks, which resulted in life-threatening injuries....

BOSTON, November 17, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Massachusetts legislature has passed a bill that elevates cross-dressing or transgendered individuals to a protected class, and grants universal access to sex-segregated areas such as bathrooms based on personal “gender identity or expression.” The measure, known as the “Transgender Equal Rights Bill” (H. 502 in the House and S. 764 in the Senate) passed the upper chamber on Wednesday in a voice vote. It’s unclear when the bill will receive final approval votes and be signed into law by Democrat Gov. Deval Patrick, a strong gay rights supporter. The bill inserts “gender identity”...

Chaz Bono received dig after dig during his performance on Dancing With The Stars. Now Cher's superstar son has been criticised from some unlikely quarters after Warren Beatty and Annette Bening's transgender son blasted Chaz as a misogynist. Stephen, 19, born Kathlyn, has hit out at the 42-year-old, who underwent female-to-male gender transition between 2008 and 2010. Writing on his blog Super Mattachine, Stephen took issue with Chaz's view that transgender people have effectively been born with a 'birth defect' - something Bono said in an interview with the New York Times. Chaz described being transgender as effectively having a...

The state Senate followed the House this morning in passing a transgender civil rights bill. Unlike the House, where the bill drew vocal opposition, the Senate passed the bill by voice vote with only one speaker, the sponsor. Governor Deval Patrick said Tuesday that he would sign it. “Sure,” Patrick told reporters. “I think we have hate crimes on the books today. They, in the case of transgender people, don’t go far enough.” The bill would protect transgender people in housing, credit, and the workplace, and would include transgender people under hate crimes protections. Opponents have called the bill an...

Equality: The Girl Scouts of Colorado says it's working to support transgender children, their families and the volunteers who serve them I had no idea! Silly me...when I grew up I thought there were distinctions between boys and girls; but this isn't that. It's about "inclusiveness" for fear of being stigmatized with the dirty-word labels, sexist/bigoted/racist/xenophobic/homophobic: The Girl Scouts of Colorado has flip-flopped on a decision not to let a 7-year-old boy join their organization, now saying he is welcome even though he’s not a girl. Bobby Montoya plays with Barbie dolls and My Little Ponies. He’s a boy, but...

A seven-year-old boy who identifies as a girl has been allowed to join the Girl Scouts in the US, despite the group initially barring him for having "boy parts". Bobby Montoya, from Denver in Colorado, dresses and behaves like a girl and wanted to join Girl Scouts like his older sister. His mother, Felisha Archuleta, told Denver's 9NEWS how she took her son to register but was told he could not join. "I said: 'Well, what's the big deal?' She said: 'It doesn't matter how he looks, he has boy parts, he can't be in Girl Scouts'," Ms Archuleta said....

SAN FRANCISCO — Transgender inmates who did not begin treatment prior to entering federal custody can now receive hormones, specialized mental health counseling and possibly gender reassignment surgery while they are in prison, according to new rules adopted by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons as part of a court settlement. A May 31 memo issued to wardens at the nation's 116 federal prisons and made public by gay rights groups in announcing the settlement Friday states, "current, accepted standards of care" will be applied to inmates who believe they are the wrong gender. Under the bureau's previous policy, issued in...

(CNN) -- Tuesday's CNN.com story about transgender children and their families shed light on an emotional topic and provoked strong response. "Transgender kids: Painful quest to be who they are" centered on identity, gender, health, parenting and child development. It's not unusual for a popular story on CNN.com to have hundreds or thousands of responses, but the overwhelmingly negative tone of Tuesday's comments raised the question about the root of the hostility. What exactly provoked such harsh opinions?

News show wishes to 'advance the discussion' with transgender contestant, but labels those opposed 'hate' groups. The controversy continues over Chaz Bono's participation in ABC's upcoming season of "Dancing with the Stars." The response to the transgender contestant's role in a once-family friendly show has left ABC with an ongoing PR problem.
