Waukesha - Ten 10-foot tall guitars, modeled after the Les Paul Gibson, arrived on a flatbed trailer - guarded by a mammoth fiberglass bulldog - Tuesday morning, a sure sign that the GuitarTown Project is for real. The Gibson Foundation and Mayor Jeff Scrima announced earlier this month that Waukesha had been selected for the project, following on the heels of cities such as Los Angeles, Nashville and London. In other GuitarTown Project cities, the guitars typically were decorated by artists, often signed by celebrities and auctioned off to raise money for charity. Later Tuesday, a Waukesha steering committee planned...

An auctioneer has hired experts to try to verify claims by the owner of the century old instrument that it belonged to Wallace Hartley, the leader of the vessel’s eight-man musical ensemble. If proved, it could become the most valuable Titanic artefact ever to be considered for auction. But the claim is being treated with caution as a result. Hartley and his fellow musicians earned legendary status for their decision to play on as the ship sank on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. They are said to have played the hymn “Nearer My God to Thee” after the...

Black metal band notorious for lyrics attacking Muslims nominated for Norwegian answer to the Grammys Controversial nomination … Norwegian band Taake have lyrics attacking Muslims A notoriously "anti-Islamic" band has been nominated for Norway's top metal prize. Taake are one of six nominees for a prestigious Spellemann award, despite a song that declares: "To hell with Muhammad and the Muhammadans!" "Norway will soon awaken!" read the lyrics to Orkan (Hurricane), on Taake's album Noregs Vaapen. The Spellemanns are Norway's equivalent of the Brits or the Grammys, and Noregs Vaapen is nominated for best metal album. Elsewhere on Orkan, singer Ørjan...

Here are some links to "vintage" exercise / workout songs to incorporate into your brand new New Year's resolution exercise routine. (With an appreciative nod to FReeper "Winstons Julia" for the original idea.)   Feel free to add your own "more classic" / "further aged" exercise workout song suggestions and links to the list. I have to go run an errand right now, but I will check back later to see if there is more than just this "1" post on this thread (if I can remember to do that).   :-) Bits and Pieces Hippy Hippy Shake Twist and Shout Funky Broadway...

Two young French songsters from Bordeaux have been chosen to write the official song of the 2012 Obama campaign for reelection. The song entitled What More is scarcely finished. Yet beginning in March, it will become the official hymn of the Barack Obama campaign. Obama chose two young French musicians, Tony Jazz and Mathieu Billon, to create a song that would rejuvenate his image  “It is a song directed at young people,” said Tony Jazz. The song itself is composed from American soul singer Al Green’s song What More Do You Want From Me integrated with clips of Obama’s speeches....

East Texans and blues lovers everywhere are mourning the loss of a Boogie-Woogie icon. Omar Sharriff died Sunday morning in his home in Marshall, Texas. He was called the last living link to that style of blues music. Today, many are celebrating his life and contributions to keep Boogie-Woogie alive. "He was one of the world's greatest Boogie-Woogie blues piano player, without a doubt," said friend and caretaker, Jack Canson. "He played with all of the greats. You can't name a great blues man he didn't play with... or woman." Canson also co-manages the Marshall, Texas Boogie Woogie Program. Sharriff...

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Sarah Hart has a gift for music and lyrics, so it’s a good thing she didn’t follow through on her initial career goals of becoming an archaeologist or pediatrician. During an interview with me on Christopher Closeup, Hart laughingly recalled a conversation she had with her band director in high school. He asked her what her career aspirations were and she responded, “I might want to be a doctor.” He just looked at her and said, “Honey, you’re not gonna be a doctor.”While some might interpret the band director’s response as harsh or condescending, Hart appreciated him...

She used to hide her Caribbean accent - Viewers were shocked on the top nine show when this soft-spoken singer out of nowhere morphed into a totally different person.... She was denied an "X Factor" fast-pass - Not only did Melanie almost get sent home before the live shows, she almost didn't make it to her audition at all. "I wanted to get a Fast Pass at the local Fox news in Florida, and they told me, 'No, we didn't enjoy you very much,'" she says, incredibly. "So I waited in line with all the thousands of people." Guess it...

Some might argue that Christmas songs start too early and play too often each season. But others can't get enough of those cheery tunes. ASCAP -- the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers -- has updated its list of most-played songs of the 2011 holiday season. For the second year in a row, "Sleigh Ride" tops the list of songs, which were all written or co-written by members of ASCAP. Since Oct.1, "Sleigh Ride" has aired 154,327 times.

During the Christmas season, we are besieged with lists of Christmas musics. Usually top ten best Christmas songs of all time or maybe the most despised Christmas songs of all time (and those lists are usually longer than lists of favorite songs). This article will not be about any of that. With this posting, I hope to introduce you to some Christmas musics you might not be familiar with. Christmas musics that do not repeat over and over again on the radio stations or besiege you at the shopping malls. No, there will be no "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree",...

It’s that time of year again, when you can’t walk into any retail shop without being blasted by Christmas music. I can’t be the only one who wants to clean my ear canals with a butcher knife whenever I hear “Silver Bells” or “Little Drummer Boy.” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Jingle Bells,” my favorite carols as a kid, are now the bane of my holiday existence. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”? No, I’ll be Van Gogh by Christmas. As famed Web-comic XKCD and, now, a popular Reddit thread have pointed out, most of our traditional Christmas music was recorded in...

"O Antiphons" for the Week before ChristmasIntroduction: Most familiar today from the Advent hymn, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," the seven traditional "O Antiphons" are actually more than a thousand years old. They have long been used at the very end of Advent (Dec. 17-23) in the liturgical prayer of the Church, as Antiphons for the "Magnificat" sung or recited during Vespers (the Evening Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours). Since the Second Vatican Council, they have also been adapted (slightly reworded and rearranged) for the "Alleluia Verse" of the Mass (the short scriptural text or paraphrase that immediately...
